Revisiting an Educational Technology blog

The blog that I decided to visit, is a place that  allows not only future teacher, but home-schooling teachers to benefit from it. Leslie and Erin are two first grade teachers who use Blogger to reach out to the world to share there experience in their first grade class. They also enable you to download some of their worksheets so that you may use in your own classrooms.

Personal Reflections

Post some personal reflections on your experience in this course thus far (i.e what have you found useful? challenging? hopes for the remainder of the semester? suggestions for the instructor?)

- The one thing that I have really found very useful is the lesson that we had on Photoshop. The ability to manipulate  photos and use them as additional educational tool to assist in the learning process, can be very useful. 
-  I haven't  found  anything too difficult in class, except the storyboard project. Its not that the project is very difficult, its just that its very time consuming
- My hopes for the remainder  of the semester, like everyone, to get straight A's. But realistically, I hope to complete all my work on time and efficiently. 
- The only suggestion i have would be for the instructor would be if she would take sometime to re-look at the website lesson. Other then that i have no other suggestion.

Photoshopped image

This image, incorporates the understanding within the Responsible Behaviors: under the Physical Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools 2.4. Which states that "...students will exhibit, in physical activity settings, cooperative, respectful, and safe behaviors." I feel that this image illustrates adequate behaviors that children should exhibit amongst one another when playing with others. With team work, listening to directions, telling the truth, helping others and good sportsmanship, we can all have fun on an off the field from the time we are young to adults.

Inquiry-based learning

Have you used inquiry-based learning as a teacher or as a student?
I feel as if I have used inquiry-based learning when I was a student, teacher, coach and an athlete. My example of an inquire-based learning is to how to teach someone to be a pitcher. Just giving instructions on how to throw from the various positions (wind-up and stretch), and telling them about the different pitches and throwing them into a game without prior demonstration, one cannot expect much. But by a combination of instructions, demonstration and constant practice one can achieve what is expected from prior success stories. I think that the quote "tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand,” can be placed well in all types of learning.  Because, a child can be given the best instructions into to learning how to pitch, and even watch countless hours of videos, but without the ability to practice what they have learned it is pointless.
What place would inquiry-based learning and/or historical thinking have in your classroom?
I feel that in my classroom, I would want to allow the students to be more hands on in there learning. Leaning more towards a more inquiry-based learning. Because, I feel that the best way for someone to learn is by asking questions as one attempts a particular task. I realize that the traditional approach to learning is focused on mastery of content, with less emphasis on the development of skills and the nurturing of inquiring attitudes before one gets a chance to actually attempt the task.  When I was in elementary, some years ago, I found myself always in a traditional approach to learning. I’m not saying it didn’t work the way it intended to, but it just took me longer to fully grasp the content I had “mastered”.

Universal Deign for Learning concept map

This is my Universal Deign for Learning concept map. Essentially, the UDL method provides us teachers with a general guideline (or framework) to enable us to reach out and engage all different types of learners. There are many parts to this concept, a bit over whelming at first, but then once you've completed the reading they all come together to complete the picture. The UDL method is a very resourceful technique, if utilized properly, for all facets of learning.

The standard that i have decided to pick is the Responsible Behaviors: under the Physical Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools 2.4.

The 2.4 standard states that "...students will exhibit, in physical activity settings, cooperative, respectful, and safe behaviors."

A good activity that i can think of that would fall within the standard and would be beneficial for all different types of learners would be the game  "capture the flag". In which individuals would come up various different strategics measures to complete the goal.

about the blog i chose to read...

The Republican Candidates’ Views on Education – Should We Do Away with the Department of Education?

The reason I chose to read this particular blog is that it influences the people who have the greatest pull in deciding how the education system (in which I to work one day) should be run. We need to know as much as we can about potential presidents before they take even one step into Washington DC. I'm not saying that I know everything about Obama, but I am very pleased with all that he's done, especially considering what was dropped in his lap by a certain ex-president.

As we know, the  Education Department is in charge of "establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, distributing and monitoring those funds, collecting data on America’s schools and disseminating research, focusing national attention on key educational issues, and prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal access to education" (Wells, 2012). Susan Wells make a good point about the Department Education needing  reform ( or as I like to call it a "smack across the face").  In this economic downturn, Wells says, "Teachers, in fear for their jobs, teach to the test and don’t always encourage free thinking and discovery. There isn’t time or money for centers, science, art or music. Teachers are forced to drop engaging and fun learning lessons in exchange for strict math and reading lessons."

As i was reading some of the presidential candidates' comments on whether to keep the Department of Education, some quotes caught my eye. For instance, this one by Newt Gingrich, who believes that we as educators, should focus our curriculum on a more patriotic view instead of multiculturalistic view. I do not like that idea. I feel that everyone should have a wider appreciation of every culture in this world, not just their own.. Coming from a background that is very rich in American, South Asian, and South American cultures, it is very important (I feel) that everyone has the opportunity to explore the world through the cultures that are around him or her. The one candidate I felt had at least one good point to make was Mitt Romney, who stated that he was against schools inflicting specific religious practices or prayer in schools. Instead Romney stressed teaching the importance of 'economics and family values" (Wells, 2012). There were many things that Romney said that I did not agree with, but I believe that teaching the importance of money management and family value is worth doing.

Overall this was a good blog, and I feel that it has a lot to do with our class. It is very informative and gives insights into the minds of Republican candidates.

Reactions to the "teddy bears go blogging"

So I just finished reading the "teddy bears go blogging" by Brenda Sherry and my reactions to the article and perception to this blogging site are very positive. The ability to create a virtual "pen-pal" is very smart idea. I remember when I was in elementary school and we wrote letters to a someone, let's say in Florida, I would have to wait nearly a week for me to hear a response. Using a teddy bear is also a smart idea, especially since its elementary aged children your are dealing with.
From a teaching standpoint this web-initiated program is very rewarding for all use it. Particularly for those students who need some editing in their works. A feature that I found to be very intriguing was the audioblogger. This feature is very awesome, as Sherry, stated, it's "...a great option for student who would prefer to record an oral message if writing or keyboarding is difficult"(2007). The ability for teachers to monitor, screen and edit comments left by students and all those who leave comments on a particular blog, is very important.
One of the best things that I feel blogging offers to a classroom is the excitement that it bring to a child's life. The ability to incorporate reading, writing, and an opportunity to "travel" without having to leave the safety of home for a tech savvy generation, is invaluable.
